# The Bamboo Thong Redesign: Why We Ditched the Elastic
We didn't set out to change the thong. We set out to fix one complaint — and it turned into a redesign we're rolling out across every style we make.
What Changed
The old bamboo thong had a narrow strap with elastic running through it. It worked, but it also meant a thin, springy line of pressure exactly where you didn't want it. The new version drops the elastic entirely and widens the pouch — the same "spearhead" tapering that's about to show up across the rest of our thong lineup. Less pinching, no harsh edges, and a strap that just sits flush instead of fighting you.
Real-World Testing, Not Lab Conditions
Chris wore the original bamboo boxer briefs to the zoo in 110-degree heat index weather and came away impressed with how the fabric handled it — so bamboo was already trusted before this redesign even started. Tilghman took the new thong through a normal night: shower, lounging, reading, sleep. His verdict: the wider pouch and softer strap made it comfortable enough that — and this matters, because he's not usually a thong guy — he'd actually wear it again.
The Side-By-Side
Laid next to the original, the difference isn't dramatic at first glance. Look closer and it's obvious: no elastic in the side strap, a wider opening through the taint area (borrowed from design work on the strapless jock), and a softer, less "stringy" feel overall. The tradeoff nobody expected: it forms to you instead of fighting you, and it doesn't feel bigger in the way that matters — it feels calmer.
The Takeaway
If elastic waistbands have ever left you irritated or self-conscious about fit, this redesign is worth trying before you write off thongs entirely. It's not about going bigger for the sake of it — it's about removing the one thing that was actually causing problems. And there's more coming: a purple colorway drops September 24th, with the same spearhead design showing up across the rest of the lineup soon.
