Key Takeaways

  • Curiosity about well-made underwear has nothing to do with your lifestyle — it has to do with comfort
  • Getting comfortable with an uncomfortable conversation takes time, but it's worth it
  • The guys most likely to make fun of the topic are often the same ones who haven't tried the product yet
  • You don't need to lead with "underwear" to have the conversation — meet people where they are
  • Real Men Apparel exists specifically so straight guys have a brand that speaks their language

This week on Real Men Real Talk, Chris and Tilghman turned the camera on themselves to answer the question that comes up constantly: why do two straight dudes spend their time talking about men's underwear?

It's a fair question. And the answer turns out to be a pretty good story.

Tilghman's Origin Story: From Hanes to "Holy Cow, There's Options"

Tilghman will be the first to tell you he wasn't exactly a men's underwear connoisseur growing up. He was a Hanes guy, boxer briefs, nothing fancy. But like a lot of guys, he was always vaguely aware of the social landscape — noticing what his brother wore, what the cool brands were, wanting to fit in.

Then he started working at Real Men Apparel, and everything changed.

"I was like, oh my gosh, there's so much potential behind a good pair of underwear."

What followed was a year and a half of genuine product curiosity — trying different pouch sizes, sampling other brands, comparing construction and fabrics. He came out the other side still firmly in the Real Men camp, but more importantly, he came out knowing why.

The early days weren't without some awkwardness, though. Tilghman was honest about that. Showing up on TikTok daily, mannequin in hand, talking to thousands of people about men's intimate apparel — that takes a certain kind of confidence to just walk into cold.

His mentor, Jared, gave him the nudge he needed: "If you want to feel something new, you've got to try something new."

So Tilghman dropped the hesitation and leaned in. A year and a half later, he's having this conversation every single day without blinking.

Chris's Story: A Rabbit Hole That Started With a Waistband

Chris's journey goes back further — over twenty years, back when the internet was just starting to make boutique brands discoverable.

It started humble. His mom got him a pair of underwear with a fabric-covered waistband, and that was enough to spark the interest. From there, a set of Calvin Klein Pima cotton boxer briefs at a big box store showed him what a real fit could feel like. Good construction. Smooth fabric. A waistband that actually looked good.

He was hooked, but the big box stores quickly showed their limits. So he went looking online — and found a whole world of boutique men's underwear brands he'd never heard of.

"Holy cow, when I saw that I was blown away."

There was just one problem. A lot of those brands were clearly marketing to a specific demographic — and it wasn't him. That created a strange kind of mental friction. Does liking this stuff mean something about me? He wrestled with it for a while before landing on the obvious answer: no, it doesn't. It just means you want underwear that fits well.

Working at Real Men Apparel brought that realization into sharp focus. Here was a brand built specifically for guys like him — straightforward, comfortable, engineered to actually solve the problem. No lifestyle assumptions required.

The Assumptions (And How to Handle Them)

On the TikTok lives, Tilghman sees the comments in real time. Every single live, without fail, a handful of people roll in with the same assumptions — questions about his "husband," LGBTQ flag emojis, the works.

His response is worth noting, because it's genuinely good. He doesn't get defensive. He just redirects: "I don't care what kind of lifestyle you live, I don't care the color of your skin — if you've got something between the legs that needs some support, this underwear is for you."

That's not a dodge. That's the actual truth of the product, delivered with enough confidence that people stop and think. And then they start asking real questions.

Chris takes a different approach in person — a slower reveal strategy. When a group of guys at a backyard get-together asks what he does, he leads with "men's apparel." If they're curious, he goes deeper. If they ask about specifics, he explains the Real Pouch system, the different pouch sizes (A, B, C, D — same concept as bra cup sizing), and what it actually feels like to have everything properly supported instead of smashed against your leg.

At a recent swing set assembly, one of the guys compared it to Saxx underwear with the little support flaps. Chris cleared it up: "No — it's much cooler than that. You get your own dedicated pouch. Completely separates you. Lets you hang free."

Conversation over. They were interested.

Why the Mockery Doesn't Stick

Both Chris and Tilghman have heard plenty of jokes from guys in their circles. Former coworkers, friends, random people online — there's always someone ready to raise an eyebrow.

But here's the thing Tilghman pointed out that's hard to argue with: the guys making the most noise are usually the guys who haven't tried it.

A number of those same skeptical former coworkers have since come back to Tilghman with completely different energy. One of them texted him after trying a pair: "peak male experience when I put it on after the shower."

That's all it takes. Try the product, and the conversation stops being weird.

Making the Conversation Normal

The whole point of this episode — and honestly, the whole point of the show — is that this doesn't have to be a strange topic. Men wear underwear every single day. The quality of that experience matters. The fit matters. The fabric matters. And there's a product that solves all of it, once guys are willing to have a five-minute conversation about it.

Chris summed it up cleanly near the end: "Just because you love great-fitting boutique men's underwear doesn't mean you have to have a certain lifestyle."

That's the whole thing. You've got permission to be curious. You've got permission to ask questions. And you've got permission to tell your buddies about it without it turning into a whole thing.

Have the uncomfortable conversation this week. Next week, it'll be comfortable.

Next Episode: Chris and Tilghman tackle the question they asked at the top of this one — is pouch underwear for bulge enhancement or for support and separation? Leave your answer in the comments before next week.
